_____

objectives of the experimental studies

  • To perform and interpret suffusion tests under complex hydraulic and mechanical loadings
  • To characterize the influence of scalping techniques on soils mechanical behavior
  • To propose and to validate an empirical relationship designed to describe the development of suffusion
  • To investigate suffusion and the mechanical behavior of eroded soils at the micro-scale (REV of several grains)
  • To simulate suffusion and its mechanical consequences at the macro-scale (specimens, physical models, real earth structures)

_____

Six devices were already developed in order to study interface erosion and suffusion processes (see publications):

a jet erosion device including the eroded mass measurement. A comparative analysis with the hole erosion test permits to propose an energy based method for providing soil surface erodibility rankings (Regazzoni P.L., 2009)

a large triaxial erodimeter permits the characterization of undisturbed specimens (f 200 or 300mm)

the second triaxial erodimeter is dedicated to fine soils with a multichannel optical sensor to quantify the mass of eroded fine particles (Bendahmane F., 2005)

a rigid wall erodimeter with the measurement of spatial change of density and interstitial pressure along the specimen (Sail Y., 2012)

a centrifuged bench in partnership with IFSTTAR (Le V.D., 2011)

a multidirectional flow erodimeter which permits to perform test directly in the core sample for limiting the disturbance (Le V.T., 2017)

Marot et al. (2012a) and Zhong et al. (2018) investigated the spatial scale effect. Nguyen H.H. (2012) and Rochim A. (2015) investigated the time scale effect.

Moreover, a suffusion erodibility classification was proposed (Marot et al., 2016) and several parametric studies permit to identify the predominant parameters which affect the soil erodibility (Bendahmane et al., 2008; Marot et al., 2009; Regazzoni and Marot, 2011; Marot et al., 2012b; Le et al., 2018).
